Farnborough to New York

The Route at a Glance

London to New York is the benchmark transatlantic trip in private aviation, and one of the most searched. It is also a route where the details matter more than usual: which aircraft makes it nonstop, which direction the wind is blowing, which airport at each end, and how the passengers clear US customs.

Starflight Aviation has arranged flights across the Atlantic since 1990. We are based at London Farnborough Airport, and our US office is at Teterboro, New Jersey, the airport most private flights into New York use. So the team that plans your departure and the team that meets your arrival work for the same company.

Flight Brief

  • A private jet from London Farnborough to New York covers around 3,000 nautical miles, taking roughly 7.5 to 8.5 hours westbound and 6.5 to 7 hours eastbound.
  • Heavy and ultra-long-range jets fly the route nonstop in both directions. Super-midsize jets fly eastbound nonstop but may need a fuel stop westbound against strong winter headwinds.
  • Teterboro Airport, around 12 miles from Midtown Manhattan, is the main New York airport for private jets and has its own US Customs and Border Protection facility.
  • Every private flight into the United States needs an eAPIS passenger manifest filed with US Customs and Border Protection before departure. Visa Waiver travellers also need an approved ESTA.
  • Starflight Aviation has staffed offices at both ends of the route, at London Farnborough Airport and at Teterboro Airport, New Jersey.

Aircraft Selection

Which Jets Fly London to New York

Range is the deciding factor on this route, and it has to be judged in the harder direction. An aircraft that crosses comfortably eastbound with a tailwind can fall short westbound into a winter jet stream. We size the aircraft for the leg that matters, not the brochure range.

The value choice for smaller groups. When a westbound stop is needed, it can double as US customs preclearance at Shannon, so little time is lost overall.

Both Ends of the Route

Where You Depart and Arrive

Most clients fly Farnborough to Teterboro, and for good reason. Both are dedicated business aviation airports with customs on site, so there are no airline queues at either end. When the aircraft, the passengers or the final destination suggest somewhere else, we plan around that instead.

London

  • London Farnborough. Our home since 1990. Business aviation only, with no scheduled airline traffic, and immigration and customs handled in the terminal. Around an hour from central London by road, or fifteen minutes by helicopter from Battersea.
  • London Luton. Convenient for north London and Hertfordshire, with a long runway that suits the heaviest aircraft at full fuel.
  • London Biggin Hill. The closest business aviation airport to the City and Canary Wharf. We check runway performance for the largest types before confirming it for a nonstop crossing.

New York

  • Teterboro, New Jersey. Where our US office is based. Around 12 miles from Midtown Manhattan, with its own US Customs and Border Protection facility and a 100,000 lb maximum aircraft weight.
  • Westchester County. Better placed for Greenwich, Connecticut and the northern suburbs, and a common alternative when Teterboro is congested.
  • Newark and JFK. No weight limit, so they take the very largest aircraft. Ground handling takes a little longer than at the dedicated business airports.

Operational Detail

Westbound, Eastbound and the Border

The flight to New York takes longer than the flight home. The jet stream runs west to east across the North Atlantic, and in winter it can blow at well over 100 knots. Westbound, the aircraft flies into it. That costs time, and more importantly it costs range, which is why the westbound leg decides the aircraft.

The border formalities are not difficult, but they are unforgiving of late paperwork. We handle them with the operator as part of the booking.

  • eAPIS manifest. Every private flight into the US needs a passenger and crew manifest filed electronically with US Customs and Border Protection before departure. Late or incorrect names can hold an aircraft on the ground.
  • ESTA or visa. Travellers using the Visa Waiver Programme need an approved ESTA, and the aircraft operator must be an approved Visa Waiver carrier. We confirm this at the quoting stage, not the day before.
  • First landing. The first US landing must be at an airport with a customs facility. Teterboro has one, and we book the arrival slot with it.
  • Shannon preclearance. Where a westbound fuel stop is needed anyway, US customs can be cleared at Shannon in Ireland. The aircraft then arrives in New York as a domestic flight.
  • Coming home. Eastbound, a General Aviation Report is filed with UK Border Force before the flight, and visa-exempt visitors to the UK, including US citizens, need an Electronic Travel Authorisation.

Cost Guide

What London to New York Costs

Transatlantic charter is priced by the aircraft, not the seat, so the cost is the same whether you fly alone or with a full cabin. The figures below are guide ranges for a one-way flight. Every quote we send shows the total cost of the trip, including fees and any positioning, rather than a headline hourly rate.

Super-Midsize
£55,000 to £75,000
Whether a westbound fuel stop is needed, and where the aircraft is positioned from.
Heavy
£80,000 to £110,000
Cabin age and specification, catering, and season. Summer and holiday weeks are in highest demand.
Ultra-Long-Range
£110,000 to £160,000
Aircraft type and availability. The newest cabins command a clear premium.

Returns and one-ways. On a return trip with a stay of several days, it is often cheaper for the aircraft to fly home empty and come back for you than to wait. On a one-way, an aircraft already based at the far end can save the cost of a positioning flight. With offices at both ends, we source from both sides of the Atlantic and quote whichever works out better.

Why Starflight Aviation

A Team at Each End of the Route

Almost every broker competing on this route is based on one side of the Atlantic, writing about an airport on the other. We have people at Farnborough and at Teterboro, so the departure and the arrival are handled by colleagues rather than handed between companies.

That matters most when the flight is part of something larger. On a tour, a production or a roadshow, a delayed aircraft affects the crew, the venue, the security, the cars and the hotel, and everyone downstream of them. Having our own team on the ground in New York is how we keep a fixed arrival fixed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about chartering a private jet between London and New York.

How much does a private jet from London to New York cost?

As a guide, a one-way flight typically costs from around £55,000 in a super-midsize jet, £80,000 to £110,000 in a heavy jet, and £110,000 to £160,000 in an ultra-long-range jet such as a Gulfstream G650. The price is for the whole aircraft, not per seat. Season, aircraft positioning and whether a westbound fuel stop is needed all move the figure, and we always quote the total cost of the trip.

How long is a private flight from London to New York?

Around 7.5 to 8.5 hours westbound from London to New York, and 6.5 to 7 hours eastbound on the way home. The difference comes from the jet stream, which blows west to east across the Atlantic and slows the westbound flight. With no check-in queues at Farnborough or Teterboro, door-to-door time is considerably shorter than an airline journey of the same length.

Can a private jet fly from London to New York without stopping?

Yes, in the right aircraft. Heavy jets such as the Challenger 650 and Falcon 900LX, and ultra-long-range jets such as the Gulfstream G650 and Global 6000, fly nonstop in both directions. Super-midsize jets fly eastbound nonstop but may need a fuel stop westbound, usually at Shannon, when winter headwinds are strong. Midsize and light jets are not suited to the crossing.

Which New York airport do private jets use?

Most use Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, around 12 miles from Midtown Manhattan. It is dedicated to business aviation and has its own US Customs and Border Protection facility. Westchester County Airport suits Connecticut and the northern suburbs, and Newark or JFK are used for the very largest aircraft, which exceed Teterboro's 100,000 lb weight limit. Starflight's US office is based at Teterboro.

Why is the flight to New York longer than the flight back?

Because of the jet stream, a band of strong wind that flows west to east across the North Atlantic. Flying to New York, the aircraft heads into it, and in winter it can exceed 100 knots. That adds time and uses more fuel, which is why the westbound leg determines which aircraft can fly the route nonstop.

What documents do I need to fly privately to the United States?

A valid passport, plus either a US visa or, for Visa Waiver Programme nationals, an approved ESTA. Before departure the operator files an eAPIS manifest with US Customs and Border Protection listing every passenger and crew member, so we need full passport details in advance. For Visa Waiver travellers the operator must also be an approved Visa Waiver carrier, which we confirm when we quote.

Where do you clear US customs on a private flight?

Usually at the first US airport of arrival, which must have a customs facility. Teterboro has one on site, so passengers clear customs in the business aviation terminal rather than an airline hall. Where a westbound fuel stop is needed, US customs can instead be cleared in advance at Shannon in Ireland, and the aircraft then lands in New York as a domestic arrival.

Can I charter a private jet from New York to London?

Yes. Our Teterboro office arranges eastbound flights directly, and because the prevailing wind is behind you, the crossing is faster and a wider range of aircraft can fly it nonstop. A General Aviation Report is filed with UK Border Force before the flight, and visa-exempt visitors to the UK, including US citizens, need an Electronic Travel Authorisation. Sourcing an aircraft already based in the US can also save a positioning flight.

How far in advance should I book a transatlantic charter?

A few days ahead is comfortable for most flights, and we regularly arrange crossings at 24 to 48 hours' notice. Allow longer around the summer, Thanksgiving, Christmas and major events, when heavy and ultra-long-range aircraft are in demand. The limiting factor on short notice is usually passport details for the US manifest, so having those ready speeds everything up.

Can a transatlantic private flight be carbon offset?

Yes. Every flight we arrange can be offset through our Carbon Responsible Programme, which combines Cool Earth rainforest protection, supported since 2009, with flight-specific verified offsets through 4AIR. For corporate clients reporting under ESG obligations, we supply the figures for each individual flight rather than an annual estimate.
