- Gibraltar. Minutes from the town centre and the business district. A short runway bounded by the sea, with border checks for Gibraltar and the Schengen Area carried out at the airport.
- Málaga. The main airport for the Costa del Sol, taking any size of aircraft. Around 45 minutes by road to Marbella, and the usual alternative when wind affects Gibraltar.
- Jerez. Useful for Jerez and the Cádiz coast, and a further alternative for larger aircraft.
Operational Detail
The Runway, the Wind and the Border
Gibraltar's runway is short and runs between the Bay of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean, with the Rock rising alongside it. When the easterly Levanter blows, the air around the Rock becomes turbulent and approaches can be difficult. Occasionally flights divert to Málaga. We use operators whose crews are specifically briefed for Gibraltar, and we agree the alternative before you fly.
The border has changed. From 15 July 2026, the treaty between the UK and the EU removed routine checks at the land frontier with Spain. Instead, arriving passengers go through Gibraltar and Schengen border checks at the airport. The practical result is that once you have landed, the drive into Spain is no longer at the mercy of the frontier queue.
- Passports. Gibraltar is not part of the UK, so a passport is needed for the flight. Checks for Gibraltar and the Schengen Area take place on arrival at the airport.
- Onward to Spain. With routine land frontier checks removed, Sotogrande is around 25 minutes by road and Marbella around an hour.
- Schengen time. Time spent in Spain after arriving through Gibraltar counts towards the Schengen 90 days in any 180 for UK and other non-EU travellers.
- Summer season. July and August bring the Sotogrande polo season and the busiest weeks for the Costa del Sol.
- Coming home. A General Aviation Report is filed with UK Border Force before the return flight into Farnborough.
