Team & Athlete Travel

Built Around the Fixture List

Recovery time is performance. Every hour a squad spends in a terminal, on a coach or waiting for a connection is an hour taken off preparation, and the fixture will not move to accommodate it. Charter turns a travel day back into a training day.

Starflight Aviation has arranged sports and event charter since 1990. We move first-team squads with staff and kit, individual athletes and their management, and full delegations to tournaments. As an independent broker we source the right aircraft for the squad size rather than fitting the squad to an aircraft we happen to hold.

Aircraft Selection

Matching Aircraft to Squad Size

Squad travel has two constraints that ordinary charter does not. Passengers are frequently much taller than the cabin was designed for, so seat pitch matters as much as seat count, and the kit is bulky enough that hold volume often decides the aircraft before the headcount does.

Beyond the Aircraft

What We Handle

Sports team charter arranged by Starflight Aviation

Team travel is a logistics exercise with a hard deadline at both ends. The flight is the easy part, and most of what goes wrong happens on the ground.

  • Fixture-led scheduling. Departure timed to the final whistle plus warm-down and media obligations, with a realistic buffer built in rather than an optimistic one.
  • Kit and equipment. Playing and training kit, medical and physio equipment, and oversize items manifested in advance so nothing is negotiated at the aircraft steps.
  • Cabin configuration. Seat pitch and layout specified for the party, which on airliner-class aircraft can mean removing rows to give the squad usable legroom.
  • Airside transfers. Coaches to the aircraft where the airport permits, keeping the squad out of the terminal in both directions.
  • Customs and immigration. Group clearance for squads and delegations, including the documentation that European and long-haul fixtures require.
  • Short-notice change. Results decide the travel. We hold provisional arrangements for both outcomes where the calendar demands it and confirm once the tie is settled.

We do not publish client names and we do not use team work in marketing without written permission, which matters more in this sector than most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from club operations managers, team logistics staff and athlete management.

Can you charter an aircraft for a full first-team squad?

Yes. A full squad with coaching staff, medical team, analysts and kit typically needs a regional or narrowbody airliner, seating anywhere from fifty to a hundred and eighty depending on the party. Smaller groups, such as a European away trip with a reduced travelling squad, often fit a heavy jet. Send us the headcount, the staff list and the equipment manifest and we will price the realistic options.

How do you handle kit, medical and training equipment?

Equipment is manifested in advance with weights and dimensions, and the aircraft is selected with hold volume in mind rather than seat count alone. This is the single most common reason a team ends up on a larger aircraft than the headcount suggests. Medical and physio equipment sometimes carries additional requirements, particularly anything pressurised or battery powered, so tell us early and we will confirm what can travel in the hold and what needs separate arrangements.

Can you accommodate taller passengers?

Yes, and it is worth raising at the enquiry stage. Standard airliner seat pitch is uncomfortable for many professional athletes, and on chartered airliner-class aircraft the cabin can often be reconfigured, including removing rows to increase legroom across the squad. On business jets the cabin dimensions vary a great deal between types. We will tell you which aircraft genuinely work for a tall party rather than which ones technically hold the numbers.

Can you arrange travel at short notice after a result?

Yes. This is routine for play-offs, replays and knockout competitions where the destination is not known until the tie is settled. Where the calendar allows, we hold provisional arrangements against more than one outcome and release whichever is not needed. Once a result is known, a confirmed departure is usually achievable within hours, with airport slots and crew duty limits the practical constraints rather than aircraft availability.

Do you fly into airports close to the stadium?

Wherever the aircraft type allows it, yes. Charter opens up regional airports that carry little or no scheduled traffic and often sit considerably closer to the ground than the nearest hub, which can remove an hour or more from the coach transfer at each end. Runway length, handling availability and airport opening hours determine which aircraft can use a given airfield, so tell us the venue early and we will plan the routing backwards from it.

Do you arrange travel for individual athletes?

Yes. Individual athletes, agents, family and management travel with us regularly, particularly around transfer windows, medicals and contract negotiations where being seen at a public airport carries its own consequences. A light or midsize jet suits most of this work, departing from a private terminal with no shared concourse and, where the airport permits, vehicle access to the aircraft steps.

Can you handle a full tournament or pre-season tour?

Yes. Multi-leg tours across several countries are best planned as a single package rather than as separate bookings, because it lets us position the aircraft across the whole tour and remove empty sectors the club would otherwise pay for. It also means the same crew and the same aircraft configuration throughout. We will quote the tour as a package and show how it compares with booking each leg individually.

How is confidentiality handled around transfers and selection?

Starflight is certified to ISO 27001:2022 for information security and holds Cyber Essentials certification, so passenger names and itineraries are handled under audited controls and shared only where needed to operate the flight. Where an operator supports it, we can request that the aircraft registration is withheld from public flight tracking, which matters when a single tail number can start a transfer story. We do not publish client names and do not use team work in marketing without written permission.

Do you arrange ground transfers as well?

Yes. Coaches are arranged at both ends and timed against the flight rather than booked separately, and where the airport permits they can meet the aircraft on the ramp so the squad avoids the terminal entirely. On tournament and tour movements we coordinate the ground legs alongside the flying so the club works from one schedule.

What drives the cost of a sports charter?

Aircraft size is the largest factor, followed by sector length, how far the aircraft has to position to reach you, crew duty and overnight costs, freight volume, and airport and handling fees at both ends. Short-notice bookings and peak fixture periods tighten availability and move pricing. Because squad travel usually returns, we will always price the round trip together, since a same-day return frequently costs less than two one-way sectors. We quote the full movement, itemised, with cancellation terms stated alongside.
